About the Academy

Knowledge that reaches everyone

The UNESCO Center for Peace Academy was founded on a straightforward conviction: that the education capable of changing a life should not depend on where that life began. It exists to put teaching of genuine quality within reach of anyone willing to do the work, and to open the Center’s own scholarship to the public it was always meant to serve.

Why the Academy exists

A great deal of the world’s most valuable teaching is not secret. It is simply out of reach — behind a fee, a campus gate, a visa, a subscription, or a language. The cost of that distance is not borne evenly. It falls on the young diplomat in a small mission, the teacher in an under-resourced school, the researcher without an institutional library card, the practitioner who already does the work and has never been given the vocabulary for it.

The Academy was created to close that distance. Its courses are built for people who intend to use them: in ministries and classrooms, in civil society and the private sector, in multilateral rooms where decisions are actually made. Its library exists so that open scholarship is genuinely open — readable in full, at no cost, by anyone who opens the page.

Peace, in the founding language of UNESCO, is built in the minds of people. That is not a sentiment. It is a description of where the work has to happen, and of what an institution can usefully do about it: teach well, teach honestly, and let no one be turned away for want of means.

What we hold ourselves to

Open by default

Every publication in the library can be read in full, in the browser, by anyone — no account, no paywall, no trial. Reading is treated as a right rather than a privilege to be granted, whatever a work's licence says about copying it.

Rigour, not shortcuts

Courses are built by practitioners and taught the way the subject is actually practised: readings that repay attention, assessment that can be failed, and a pass mark that means something. A certificate the Academy issues is one a colleague can verify by its serial number.

Reachable from anywhere

The site is designed for a modest connection and a small screen first, because that is how most of the world reads. It meets accessibility standards not as a compliance exercise but because a lesson nobody can use has not been taught.

Answerable for what we publish

Policies carry version numbers. Certificates cannot be quietly altered. What the Academy states about a course — its hours, its assessment, who teaches it — is what the course delivers.

Who we are

The Academy is the online learning arm of the UNESCO Center for Peace, a flagship member of the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers & Associations, based in Frederick, Maryland. The Center has spent years convening young people, educators and practitioners around the questions that UNESCO was founded to address — and the Academy carries that work to people who cannot travel to a room.

The Center is an independent civil-society organisation within the worldwide movement of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations. It is not an organ of UNESCO and does not speak on its behalf.
